I work for a company that manufactures weather stations, marine instruments, and products that monitor driving. I started out in our customer service department, working in that department for just a little under 4 years. A little over a year ago I got recommended to switch to a different department. Engineering. I am now the Document Controller for Research & Development, otherwise know as the Engineering Department. I never thought I’d ever work with engineers. But I am actually enjoying it. I love my job.
Just what is a Document Controller? Basically it is an over glorified data entry person, only I work with engineers. And let me tell you, engineers are the smartest dumb people I have ever met. They have smarts, just not a whole lot of common sense at times. They live in a world all their own.
So what do I do? I make sure the bill of materials (BOMs) are entered into our system correctly for manufacturing to build what ever product they are to build. At first the BOMs confused me to all hell, especially the BOMs that had many different BOMs attached to them. I’m a fast learner though and caught on quickly.
I also make sure that all the documents for our products are stored. Like the schematics, data sheets for all the components that are used on our printed circuit boards (PCBs). Along with all the files that are associated with the PCBs and the PCBAs (printed circuit board assemblies). I now control all of our part numbers, make sure all the revisions of our products are current or need to be updated, and a whole bunch of other shit that I am sure you don’t want to hear about. I’ve probably bored you enough already with all this shit. I can now add AutoCad software to my list of software programs that I can use now though. One of the engineers that I just love to death, he’s a very nice guy and easy to work with, is teaching me how to use quite a few of the tools in AutoCad. One of these days I just might be able to make a drawing of something!
Working with the engineers has been quite an eye opener. There are 2 in particular that I always have problems working with. I’ll call them Almighty and Dink. Dink is older, so he is set in his ways about certain things. He always wants his shit done now. Yeah, sure Dink….right on it! Along with all these other ones that I am working on.
Almighty, he really frustrates the hell out of me. He’s very condescending in the way that he talks to you. Just because you are an engineer doesn’t mean you know everything buddy! You should hear some of the questions he asks in our engineering meeting that has nothing to do with engineering. I tell ya, those engineers think in a totally different way than the rest of us NORMAL people do. Aye! I’ve had to put Almighty in his place a few times in the way that he talks to me. I’m sure he doesn’t like working with me either. Can we say BITCH? Heh, heh, heh. I love it!
Then there is my office mate, also an engineer. Let me tell you, he is even weirder that all the other engineers put together. I think he is in his early 40’s and I know for a fact that he is extremely 420 friendly. We’ll just call him Chronic. I even asked him one day if he did a lot of drugs growing up. He said, ‘How do you think I made it through high school and college?’ Yeah, that explains a lot buddy! He is a helluva smart guy, but there is a screw loose up there somewhere.
There is never a dull day in our office, let me tell you. Chronic likes to fuck with everybody there. You can be having a conversation with the guy and in the middle he will throw in some off the wall phrase and still continue with the conversation as if he didn’t say anything. They first time I heard him do it, I laughed my ass off. I understood the whole conversation, INCLUDING the phrase he threw in. And the phrases always fit the conversation one way or another. He went to a Tom Petty concert over the weekend so lately his phrases have all been Tom Petty or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers related. The guy cracks me up. I don’t mind sharing an office with him. I’d rather it be him than anyone else.
The funny thing about Chronic, he hardly talks to anyone within the company, the other engineers an exception. I used to also work the front desk during lunch time and in the afternoons, and every time he’d walk by, his head way always down and he wouldn’t look at me, or anyone else for that matter. You’d say hi or bye to him and he’d just mutter something and continue to walk by. He’s a strange one that one is! Funny as hell though.
So now if you see me complaining about work and mention any of the names above, you’ll have some kind of insight. Not like you really care, huh?
You can’t say that you weren’t afore warned. It says plain as day at the top of this blog that this is the ramblings of me. No rhyme, no reason….even to me.
